With a quarter of a century under his belt as the assistant boys’ basketball coach at Mid-Prairie, Chris Kern, was notified in January that he was among the six finalists selected for the 2011 National Coach of the Year award.[caption id="attachment_2190" align="alignright" width="260" caption="Chris Kern, Mid-Prairie assistant boys’ basketball coach, was selected as the assistant coach 2011 National Coach of the Year Finalist. Mid-Prairie Athletic Director Don Showalter said he depends very highly on his assistant coaches for different reasons, and Chris’s role is quite extensive. “One of the things you always look at is loyalty. And Chris has been loyal to our program and myself for the last 25 years,” said Showalter. “This award speaks very highly of his longevity and how much he enjoys his position working with the kids over the years.”
Kern attributes his working relationship with Showalter as giving him many opportunities.
“With Don I’ve been able to do some things like the McDonald’s All-American game, The Capitol Classic game in Washington DC (now the Michael Jordan Classic), and the Snow Valley Camp that runs in the summer, that other assistants don’t,” said Kern. “He’s been a great mentor to me.”
Although there have been ups and downs coming back to his alma mater, Kern said he tries to be as fair as you can with everyone.
