Orpha B. Yoder, 91, of Kalona, Iowa, died Monday, March 14, 2011, at Mercy Hospital in Iowa City, Iowa. Orpha Yoder portrait
Celebration of life will be held at 10:30 a.m., Thursday, March 17, 2011, at the West Union Mennonite Church in rural Parnell. Pastor Martha Yoder and Pastor Ray Reimer will officiate. Burial will be in West Union Cemetery. Visitation was from 2-8 p.m. Wednesday at the Yoder-Powell Funeral Home in Kalona where the family was present from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. A memorial fund has been established for Iowa City Hospice. Orpha B. Yoder was born February 23, 1920, in Wellman, Iowa, the daughter of Edward and Roseanna (Kelley) Schauf. She graduated from Wellman High School. She was united in marriage to Ralph H. Yoder in 1941. He died in 1942. Mrs. Yoder was later united in marriage to Raymond H. Yoder in 1947. She lived in the Wellman and Kalona community all of her life, where she worked at Town and Country in Wellman and Parkview Manor as a CNA. Mrs. Yoder was a member at the West Union Mennonite Church and WMSC. She enjoyed listening to music, puzzle books and crocheting.
She is survived by three children, Roseanna Yoder, Buchanan, Michigan; Becki Miller, Craig, Colorado; Robert L. Yoder, Kalona; and a granddaughter, Hannah Miller, Spokane, Washington.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husbands; two sons-in-law, James Glaze and Arnold L. Miller; and four brother,s Leon, Wilbur, Dale Schauf and an infant.

Kenneth Wieland

Funeral Mass was held Saturday, March 12, 2011, in St. Mary’s Catholic Church, Riverside. Burial with military honors by VFW Post #6414 was in the Mt. Olivet Cemetery, Riverside.
A memorial has been established for the Riverside First Responders and Iowa Cystic Fibrosis.

Kenneth J. Wieland was born January 22, 1929, in Washington, Iowa, the son of John and Elsie Thompson Wieland. He graduated from St. Mary’s High School in Riverside. Mr. Wieland was united in marriage to Mary F. Lenz in St. Mary’s Church, Lone Tree, Iowa, September 18, 1950. Mr. Wieland farmed for many years and was employed at Farmers Supply Sales, Inc, in Kalona for 14 years.
He was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church, Riverside, and VFW Post 6414, Riverside.
He is survived by his wife, Mary Wieland, Riverside; two sons, John Wieland, Riverside; Randy Wieland, Riverside; a daughter, Becky Hedden, Rogers, Arkansas; four grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; two sisters, Birtie and husband Lloyd Duwa, Washington, Iowa; Margery Goodlander, Washington; and one brother, Russell and wife Rose Wieland, Riverside.
He was preceded in death by his parents and a son, Rick.

Lillian Marie (Wolf) Statler

Lillian Marie (Wolf) Statler, 87, of Washington, Iowa, died Sunday, March 13, 2011, at Halcyon House in Washington.
Funeral services were held at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday, March 16, 2011, at the Jones & Eden Funeral Home in Washington with Pastor Julie Poulsen officiating.  Interment was in the Elm Grove Cemetery in Washington.

Lillian Wolf was born September 2, 1923, in Lockridge, Iowa, the daughter of Jacob J. and Hedvig C. (Carlson) Wolf.  She graduated from Lockridge High School in 1941.  She married Shirley S. Statler January 6, 1944 in Libertyville, Iowa.   She worked at Burlington Ordinance plant during the war years, Shaefer Pen Company in Mt. Pleasant, Carle Memorial Hospital in Urbana, Illinois and Kalona Savings Bank for 19 years. She was a member of the United Methodist Church.  She enjoyed visiting with neighbors, sewing, house plants and garden flowers.
Mrs. Statler is survived by her daughters, Shirleen and husband John Huber, Wellman, Iowa; Christine Statler, Monroe, Wisconsin; two grandsons, Joel Huber and wife Laura, Wellman; Jacob Huber and wife Courtney, Dewitt, Iowa; a granddaughter, Jolisa and husband Derek Bombei, Wellman; four great-grandchildren, Alexa and Callie Huber and Tate and Tessa Bombei; and her nieces, Gloria Zager, Knoxville, Iowa; and Angela Peiffer, Washington.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband in 2007; two brothers, Raymond and Jacob; and her sister, Mabel Hayward.

Lorraine Blanche Hillyer was born April 27, 1921, near Tipton, Iowa, the daughter of Earl Theodore and Maud Blanche (McCroskey) Hillyer. She grew up on a farm in the Tipton community. In 1955 she lived in Lone Tree and in the early 80s she moved to Wellman. Ms. Hillyer was united in marriage to Francis McSwiggin June 26, 1949, in Canton, Missouri. He later died. She later was united in marriage to Ray M. Jones March 1, 1969, in Aledo, Illinois. She worked at the University of Iowa in housekeeping for 18 years retiring in 1983. She became a resident of Pleasantview Home in 2009.
Mrs. Jones is survived by a daughter, Sherri (Terry) Bringman, Kinross, Iowa; two grandsons, Nicholas Bringman and Christopher Bringman; a great-granddaughter, Jenna; and a brother, LaMoyne Hillyer, Tipton.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husbands, Francis and Ray; two brothers, Harold Hillyer and Raymond Hillyer; and three sisters, Gladys Paustian, Violet Deering and Melba Miller.

Manfred (Leo) Leodolter

Manfred Leodolter was born in Murzzuschlag, Styria, Austria, the son of Stefan Stus and Margarete Leodolter. He was raised by his grandparents, Frederick and Maria Leodolter.
July 5, 1973, he married Janice Zook in Vienna, Austria. That fall he immigrated to the USA and they made their home in rural Iowa City. He became a citizen in 1979. Their son Frederick (Fritz) was born in 1982.
Mr. Leodolter’s work as an engineer in the food industry took the family to live in New Hampton, Iowa, Centralia, Illinois and Creston, Iowa. His last employment was as a consultant with Kraft Foods. At the time of his death he was retired and lived in Sauk Rapids.
Mr. Leodolter enjoyed reading and watching nature and history programs, and trips back to Austria to visit his mother.
He is survived by his son, Frederick Leodolter and grandson, Tegan Leodolter, Council Bluffs, Iowa; his mother-in-law, Marguerite Zook; a brother-in-law, Donald (Verna) Zook; a sister-in-law, Linda (Paul) Paine, and their children, LeAnne, Jennifer, Kathleen, and Kevin Zook; and Elizabeth Paine. He was preceded in death by his wife, Janice in 2002; his parents; and father-in-law, Vernon Zook.

Florence M. Day, 88, died at Adair County Memorial Hospital Tuesday, August 31, 2010.? Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday, September 3, 2010, at the Penn Center Methodist Church, rural Earlham.? Burial and military rites will be in the Penn Center Cemetery.? Mrs. Day enlisted in the United States Marine Corp in February 1944 during World War II and served her country until her Honorable Discharge as a Sergeant in March 1946.? She was very active in the Penn Center WSCS and later UMW.? She was also a very active member of the Order of Eastern Star and served at each Star Point and every office; her favorite being that of Chaplain.?Mrs. Day was a homemaker Her favorite pastime, besides raising her family, was being a sports fan, cheering on her children, grandchildren and her favorite teams.
She is survived by a brother, Fred Morford, Jr. and wife Verna of Dexter, daughter-in-law Michel (Mikey) Day, Greenfield; daughter Lynn Margheim and husband Rick, Nebraska; sons, Scott Day, III and wife Elaine, Keota; Fred Day and wife Karla, Earlham; Jon Day and partner Tom Petrola, New Jersey; Jack Day and friend Shelly, Dexter, Iowa; grandchildren Heather Honkomp, Mackinzie Day, Tad Day, April Altenhofen, Dusty Day, Jaime Rucker, Jeremy Day, Jason Day, Katie Day, Chad Day, Cody Day, Shania Day and Grace Day; 15 great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews, other relatives and numerous friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents, a sister, Lenore; her husband, Scott; and a son, Morgan.

Lloyd Bender was born November 7, 1924, in Kalona the son of Ira and Lena (Miller) Bender. He attended various rural schools, including Pleasant Hill, Center and Middleburg. He was united in marriage to Barbara Stutzman at Fairview Church December 24, 1944. Mr. Bender was a farmer and later worked at Gingerich Implement, Kalona Battery Factory and the Kalona Bakery, where he drove the delivery van for 15 years. He was a member of the Fairview Mennonite Church and later transferred membership to the Kalona Mennonite Church. Mr. Bender enjoyed pitching fastball, watching his grandkids in their sports activities and was a NASCAR fan, where his favorite driver was Richard Petty.
Survivors include his wife, Barbara Bender, Kalona; four children and their spouses, Derald (Marilyn) Bender, Kalona; Dwight (Jenelle) Bender, Kalona; Delwyn “Bud” Bender, Kalona; Darlene (Ron) Gingerich, Riverside; one foster son, Mike (Emily) Ferguson, Kalona; seven grandchildren, Mike (Brenda) Bender, Vicki Bender, Kelby (Leanne) Bender, Tiffani (Richie) Davis, Torrey (Jody) Gingerich, Tyrell Gingerich, Tristan (Jacque) Gingerich, three foster granddaughters, Kelli (Justin) Schrock, Jodi and Mollie Ferguson; eight great-grandchildren, Cassidy and Abe Bender, Madelyn and Morgyn Bender, Lillian and Drew Davis, Grady and Landry Gingerich; one sister, Ruby (Owen) Miller, Oxford, Iowa; and one brother-in-law, Paul Shetler, Greenwood, Delware.
He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Ivan and Monroe Bender; and two sisters, Dorothy Shetler and Mary Bender.

Martha Ella Moffit

Martha Ella Moffit, 92, of North English, Iowa, died at the English Valley Care Center in North English Saturday, August 21, 2010. A Celebration of Life Service was held Tuesday, August 24, 2010, in the Powell Funeral Home and Cremation Service in North English with Pastor Edwin Jordan officiating. Martha Ella Denison was born January 6, 1918, the daughter of George W. and Bessie (Aggson) Denison in the Green Valley area east of North English. She attended a rural school in Fillmore township. She married Wayne W. Moffit April 10, 1938, in Lancaster, Missouri. The couple lived and farmed in the Green Valley area until they moved to North English in August 2006. She spent the winters in Yuma, Arizona, for many years, traveling to the casinos and going out to eat. Mrs. Moffit always had a big garden, and loved to cook for anyone that would come to eat her 6-course meal.
Mrs. Moffit is survived by her son, Robert E Moffit and his wife Gay, Glen Alan, Virginia; three granddaughters, Debbie (Clay) Toler, Glen Alan; Sherrie (Ron) Maschmann, Millersburg, Iowa; Kristi Hargis, Council Bluffs, Iowa; 12 great-grandchildren, Carrie Knipfer, Harper, Iowa; Steven Knipfer, Ottumwa, Iowa; Ryan Knipfer, Wessington Springs, South Dakota; Megan Hall, Mechanicsville, Virginia; Trenton Forrest, North English; Danielle Weldon, Glen Alan; Jeannie Hargis, Jessica Hargis, Janna Hargis, all of Council Bluffs, Iowa; Rhonda Waters, Iowa City, Iowa; Renee Maschmann, Coralville, Iowa; Michelle Koehn, North English; nine great-great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband (4 years to the day); two sisters, Sarah Moffit and Helen Denison; and two brothers, George S. and Ross Denison.

Geraldine M. Schlabaugh

Geraldine “Gerry” M. Schlabaugh, 90, of Kalona, Iowa, died Friday, August 20, 2010, at the Pleasantview Home in Kalona following a lingering illness.
Funeral services were held Monday, August 23, 2010, in Lower Deer Creek Mennonite Church in rural Kalona with Pastors Don Patterson and Dick Swartzendruber officiating. Gerry Swartzendruber was born August 13, 1920, in rural Wellman, Iowa, the daughter of Henry and Lillian (Miller) Swartzendruber. She attended Pacific Rural School and was united in marriage to Delmar “Shorty” Schlabaugh in Lower Deer Creek Mennonite Church October 26, 1945. Mrs. Schlabaugh was a member of the Lower Deer Creek Mennonite Church where she was involved in WMSC, and teaching Sunday School and Bible School. She was a homemaker and worked as a sales clerk at Edmundson’s and later the Woodin Wheel in Kalona. She also volunteered at the Crowded Closet and Pleasantview Home. She enjoyed golfing in her earlier years and was a member of the Kalona Golf Course. She also enjoyed collecting antiques and spending time with her family.
Survivors include one daughter, Judy (Michael) Oesch, Middlebury, Indiana; two granddaughters, Laura (Ryan) Yoder and Lisa Oesch; and one great-grandson, Hudson Yoder.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Shorty on November 15, 1984; five sisters, Laura Erb, Geneva Hooley, Dorothy Brenneman, Pauline Swartzendruber, Lavanda Kinsinger; and one brother, Harry Swartzendruber.
