The Mid-Prairie Golden Hawks upset 15th ranked Monticello for their first ever win over a ranked opponent in Wellman.
The 5-2 win came Monday, April 18 at the Wellman Soccer Complex.
“I have pushed these girls, telling them that size matters not, and that was put to the test with the size of the Monticello players,” said head coach Bristol Harris.
The teams went head to head under cold, windy conditions.
“Missing key midfielder Caroline Allen had the team on edge but the girls made the right moves and are off to their best season start,” said coach Harris.

The IMS soccer team stepped onto the field on a cold blustery evening April 18 against a tough Columbus team and came away with a hard fought 1-0 win.
In the first half, play went back and forth as both teams sought to establish and maintain possession of the ball. It soon became apparent both teams had skilled defensive players and that finding goals would be difficult. The IMS back line of Marshall Schrock, Chris Perez, Lukas Yoder and Levi Schrock along with Tommy Rhodes held steady, thwarting Columbus runs into the box.
The best scoring chance of the first half came on an IMS direct kick as Marshall Schrock sent the ball into the box where it was one touched into the goal but in the midst of the celebration the line judge raised the flag for offside nullifying the goal. At half the score was knotted 0-0.
In the second half, IMS midfielders John Nicholson, Kyle Miller, Seth Miller, Dillon Bender, and Nathan Peters upped their work rate resulting in more possession and more scoring opportunities. However, Columbus had the best chance to score when they were awarded a penalty kick with 18 minutes left in the game. The Columbus player stepped to the ball but struck it wide where it deflected off the post and out of bounds.
Pushing the ball forward the IMS midfield got the ball to Chance Miller just outside the box. Gathering in the ball and turning, Miller burst by the defender and struck the ball into the net with 12:47 left on the clock.
Columbus responded by bringing players forward and creating several chances. The back line stepped up their game and held strong, knocking many balls out of the box. Goalie Ben Brenneman gathered in those balls which made it through resulting in 9 saves for the game.
IMS is 2-1 overall and 2-0 in the conference.
