MP Girls Golf at State

The Mid-Prairie Girls golf team will make a return trip to the State Meet in Adel by virtue of their runner-up finish at the Regional tournament held Monday, May 24 at the West Liberty Golf Club. The Golden Hawks shot a team score of 395 to Burlington/Notre Dame’s score of 391.
“Even though it may say “runner-up” on the score sheet, this is a big win for the girls,” said head coach Tracy McArtor. “To make it to the State Meet and to be only one of eight teams there is a great accomplishment in itself. To make it back in consecutive years is proof of how hard the girls have worked, they did an awesome job today.”
Kelsie Berg and Linsey Thomann started things off turning in front nine scores of 44 and 47 respectively, followed by Kate Yoder’s 52, Allison McArtor 54, Nicole Adams with 55, and Jordyn Kelso with 65. The heat and humidity took its toll on some of the kids on the back nine, but the girls battled thru it and maintain close to what they shot on the front. In fact, there was only a one shot difference as Mid-Prairie’s team score on the front was 197 and M-P turned in a 198 on the back.
“As brutal as the heat was on Monday,” said coach McArtor, “they really gutted it out and it’s something I’m proud of as a coach and they should all be proud of as athletes.”
Berg finished in a tie for 3rd in the individual race with a score of 89, followed close by Thomann who tied for 4th with 95. The Golden Hawks will travel to the River Valley Golf Course in Adel for the two day State Tournament held Tuesday and Wednesday, June 1 and 2. Only two teams from the four Regional meets qualify for state plus the top five individuals and ties.
“We’re looking forward to a fun couple days in Adel and will look to improve on our 4th place finish from last year,” said coach McArtor.
M-P Scores: Kelsie Berg – 44-45(89); Linsey Thomann – 47-48(95); Allison McArtor – 54-51(105); Kate Yoder – 52-54(106); Nicole Adams – 55-55(110); Jordyn Kelso – 65-62(127).
Team Scores: 1) Burlington/Nortre Dame – 391; 2) Mid-Prairie – 395; 3) Wilton – 417; 4) West Liberty – 419; 5) North Cedar – 427; 6) Pella Christian – 470

The Mid-Prairie girls’ golf team opened their 2010 season with a 1 stroke loss to Wilton Friday, April 9, by a score of 196 to 197. Kelsie Berg led the way for the Golden Hawks with a score of 44 which was also good for meet medalist.
“Overall the kids played pretty well for the first meet of the year,” said Head Coach Tracy McArtor. “They all went back over their rounds and found places where they thought they could have made up that one stroke difference pretty easily.
“For the most part it sounds like their short game and putting is what gave them the most problems. We’ll take some extra time during practice this week and work hard on that part of the game. Otherwise, from tee to green things are not going too bad.”
Following Berg was Nicole Adams with 49, Linsey Thomann and Allison McArtor with 52’s, freshman Maddie Gent with 59 and Breanna McFarland with 67.
“We’ve got lot’s of good competition coming up on some good layouts for the girls to improve their games and have some fun,” said coach McArtor.
The girls’ JV squad came away with a 5 shot victory, 265 to 270. Kate Yoder was low with a score of 54, followed by Summer Gracey 65, Leah Parrott 72 and Shelly Palmer 74.

MP Track @ Keokuk

Six Mid-Prairie Golden Hawks competed at the Keokuk Relays Thursday, April 8.
Jaemin Powell and Ryan Hoffman competed in the open 100, 200 and 400 working on starts and getting some sprint work in. “I was very pleased with what these boys accomplished. It has been a tough week with cold weather and windy conditions and they faired well,” said Head Coach Steve Hollan.
Powell placed second in the 200 and 400 m dash at 24.27 and 55.21 respectively and finished third in the 100 m dash at 11.61. Hoffman finished first in the 400 m dash at 54.97, second in the 100 m dash at 11.56, and fourth in the 200 m dash at 24.82.
“Tanner Miller went with one goal and that was to drop his 400 last time and he did just that with no competition,” said coach Hollan. Miller went into the meet with a time of 55.35 and dropped it to 54.57 taking first place uncontested. Drake only takes the top eight in this event in the entire state over all classes. “Based on past years performances it looks to be a good enough time but we won’t until the end of this week,” said coach Hollan.
The only other event for the Golden Hawks was the 4×400 relay of Miller, Justin Hochstetler, Tyler Asbe and Quinn Hollan. “This group of guys went into the race with a time of 3:29.84, with the goal to drop the time and better their changes of getting into the Drake Relays with only 24 teams in the state invited,” said coach Hollan. They dropped their time to 3:29.32 for a first place finish but will have to wait to see if it’s good enough.
The Hawks will compete next at home in the Hawk Relays Friday, April 16.

IMS Girls defeated by English Valley

For the second straight night, the IMS Girl’s basketball team found themselves on a floor with a basketball between 10 people. This time, traveling to English Valleys High School to take on the Bears for a non-conference game.
First half of play was mostly even, with the Bears holding a slight advantage (6-3) at the end of the first quarter. However, in the second EV started to pull away, extending that lead to 23. Dismal shooting by IMS left them down 9-23 at half-time.
The shooting woes continued in the second half for Iowa Mennonite as they only managed to score five more points. However, it was not from a lack of effort. IMS had good open looks, just found the rims unforgiving. They would close out the night with a loss, 50-14.
Scoring, though bleak, was led by junior Carly Unruh with five, while juniors Mollie Ferguson, Mo Brenneman, Emma Yutzy and Aliese Gingerich added two a piece.
The schedule doesn’t get any easier for Iowa Mennonite, as the final week of regular season competition is heavy laden with SEISC teams. Monday, the teams travel to Lone Tree for a “pre-Christmas blizzard” reschedule. On Tuesday the ladies will travel east again to take on the Wildcats of Columbus, looking to avenge their three point loss on alumni night. After a day-long break, they travel to south division West Burlington for a junior varsity, varsity match up, and on Friday IMS will face Highland in the Husky territory.
