The Mid-Prairie girls’ golf team opened their 2010 season with a 1 stroke loss to Wilton Friday, April 9, by a score of 196 to 197. Kelsie Berg led the way for the Golden Hawks with a score of 44 which was also good for meet medalist.
“Overall the kids played pretty well for the first meet of the year,” said Head Coach Tracy McArtor. “They all went back over their rounds and found places where they thought they could have made up that one stroke difference pretty easily.
“For the most part it sounds like their short game and putting is what gave them the most problems. We’ll take some extra time during practice this week and work hard on that part of the game. Otherwise, from tee to green things are not going too bad.”
Following Berg was Nicole Adams with 49, Linsey Thomann and Allison McArtor with 52’s, freshman Maddie Gent with 59 and Breanna McFarland with 67.
“We’ve got lot’s of good competition coming up on some good layouts for the girls to improve their games and have some fun,” said coach McArtor.
The girls’ JV squad came away with a 5 shot victory, 265 to 270. Kate Yoder was low with a score of 54, followed by Summer Gracey 65, Leah Parrott 72 and Shelly Palmer 74.

Six Mid-Prairie Golden Hawks competed at the Keokuk Relays Thursday, April 8.
Jaemin Powell and Ryan Hoffman competed in the open 100, 200 and 400 working on starts and getting some sprint work in. “I was very pleased with what these boys accomplished. It has been a tough week with cold weather and windy conditions and they faired well,” said Head Coach Steve Hollan.
Powell placed second in the 200 and 400 m dash at 24.27 and 55.21 respectively and finished third in the 100 m dash at 11.61. Hoffman finished first in the 400 m dash at 54.97, second in the 100 m dash at 11.56, and fourth in the 200 m dash at 24.82.
“Tanner Miller went with one goal and that was to drop his 400 last time and he did just that with no competition,” said coach Hollan. Miller went into the meet with a time of 55.35 and dropped it to 54.57 taking first place uncontested. Drake only takes the top eight in this event in the entire state over all classes. “Based on past years performances it looks to be a good enough time but we won’t until the end of this week,” said coach Hollan.
The only other event for the Golden Hawks was the 4×400 relay of Miller, Justin Hochstetler, Tyler Asbe and Quinn Hollan. “This group of guys went into the race with a time of 3:29.84, with the goal to drop the time and better their changes of getting into the Drake Relays with only 24 teams in the state invited,” said coach Hollan. They dropped their time to 3:29.32 for a first place finish but will have to wait to see if it’s good enough.
The Hawks will compete next at home in the Hawk Relays Friday, April 16.

IMS 4, Highland 0
On a blustery chilly night Thursday, April 8, the IMS soccer team went on the road to play Highland. Just minutes into the game IMS was able to create offensive pressure but struggled to put the ball into the net. This changed as Truman Shetler fired a shot which the goalie could not handle cleanly. The ball ricocheted to Dillon Bender who calmly redirected the ball into the net.
The rest of the half saw numerous shots saved by the Highland goalie, or saw the ball sailing high over the crossbar and through the football goalposts. With seven minutes left in the half IMS was awarded a direct kick near midfield. John Nicholson sent a ball knuckling towards the goal and watched as it curved by the goalie for the 2-0 half time lead.
The second half saw more of the same as IMS created many chances but found it difficult to tally the score. Brian Miller took the ball, beat several defenders and rocketed a shot into the far corner. Ten minutes later Miller took another ball into the box and slid it to his right where Truman Shetler was waiting to redirect the ball into the net for the
The back line of John Nicholson, Marshall Schrock, Kyle Miller and Chris Perez had a strong game limiting Highland to four shots. In addition, goalie Ben Brenneman did a nice job helping to defend against some of Highlands dangerous long throws into the box.

For the second straight night, the IMS Girl’s basketball team found themselves on a floor with a basketball between 10 people. This time, traveling to English Valleys High School to take on the Bears for a non-conference game.
First half of play was mostly even, with the Bears holding a slight advantage (6-3) at the end of the first quarter. However, in the second EV started to pull away, extending that lead to 23. Dismal shooting by IMS left them down 9-23 at half-time.
The shooting woes continued in the second half for Iowa Mennonite as they only managed to score five more points. However, it was not from a lack of effort. IMS had good open looks, just found the rims unforgiving. They would close out the night with a loss, 50-14.
Scoring, though bleak, was led by junior Carly Unruh with five, while juniors Mollie Ferguson, Mo Brenneman, Emma Yutzy and Aliese Gingerich added two a piece.
The schedule doesn’t get any easier for Iowa Mennonite, as the final week of regular season competition is heavy laden with SEISC teams. Monday, the teams travel to Lone Tree for a “pre-Christmas blizzard” reschedule. On Tuesday the ladies will travel east again to take on the Wildcats of Columbus, looking to avenge their three point loss on alumni night. After a day-long break, they travel to south division West Burlington for a junior varsity, varsity match up, and on Friday IMS will face Highland in the Husky territory.

In a weekend chock full of basketball, the Iowa Mennonite Girl’s basketball team found themselves in a must win situation with SEISC-North foe the Wapello Arrows.
Their previous match up was unfavorable for IMS, dropping a barn-burner of a game in the final seconds. This time, the home team would be the victor after breaking the Arrows 39-36.
Iowa Mennonite jumped out to an early lead, ahead by as many as four. At the end of the first period however, Wapello had closed the gap and taken the lead 7-6. The second quarter would see three lead changes between the two. As time ticked away before the break, IMS’s Laura Hochstetler nabbed three quick steals, turned them into three quick lay-ups and ignited the crowd into deafening ovation. Iowa Mennonite would hold a 20-17 leaded headed to the locker-rooms.
The second half was all IMS, as they kept Wapello on their heels through much of the third period. A late onslaught of shooting in the fourth by Wapello may have been hazardous, but the Arrows were forced to foul, sending junior point guard Mo Brenneman to the free throw line six times. Iowa Mennonite sealed the deal and captured their first Southeast Iowa Super Conference victory 39-36.
Junior Carly Unruh lead the IMS attach with nine points and five rebounds, while Hochstetler added a bucket to her three lay-ups for eight more. Brenneman finished the night with seven points, shooting five of 11 from the charity stripe. Junior Emma Yutzy and senior Nicole Hershberger each added six a piece, Hershberger also finished with nine rebounds. And rounding out the scoring for Iowa Mennonite was senior Kerri Hostetler with three points and two rebounds.
The night was especially momentous, as a post-game ceremony honored the five seniors. Linnea Slabaugh, Nicole Hershberger, Kerri Hostetler, Jackie Jensen, and Sara E. (statistician).

Coming off a bleak performance in their match up with English Valleys, the Iowa Mennonite girl’s basketball team came ready and focused Monday, February 1, as they traveled to Lone Tree High School to take on the Lions in a rescheduled Southeast Iowa Super Conference game.
From the tip off, IMS was off and running, getting two quick points on a Mo Brenneman (junior) lay-up. Keeping the Lions on their heels, the Iowa Mennonite girl’s held a 10-7 advantage through the first period. Though Lone Tree took the lead in the second period, IMS closed out the first half of regulation with a 21-18 lead.
A lead they never relinquished until late in the fourth quarter, when the Lions took a 42-30 decision with three minutes remaining. Inexperience in late game management, and foul trouble kept Iowa Mennonite from getting any closer than 11 points of the Lions, finishing the night 44-33.
Leading scorers for Iowa Mennonite were Carly Unruh (junior) with nine points and five rebounds, while freshman Laura Hochstetler scored six in the first half. Senior Nicole Hershberger and junior Emma Yutzy each added five points, with five and four rebounds respectively. Brenneman would finish with four points. Junior Mollie Ferguson knocked in a basket and a free throw for three, and senior Linnea Slabaugh hit the second two free throws.

The Hawks fought back in the third quarter to cut the Regal lead to 16 after three. The young Hawks ran out of gas in the final frame and Regina continued to press the entire game to win by 30 points.
“In the defeat, their was still some improvement from the first time we played Regina and with them pressing the entire game, the deficit looks worse than the game was,” said Pennington. “I hope the girls remember this year and games like this as we get into the next few years in terms of teams pressing us ahead by 30. It should serve as motivation as we fully expect to complete for conference championships as soon as next year.”

Coach’s comments: We played a decent half but continue to struggle shooting the basketball on a consistent basis. We competed better and rebounded well, but we struggled containing their offense in the half court.
We would like to thank everyone that contributed to our Pink Out. We had a great crowd and the collection can raised $150 in donations that will go directly to the Washington County chapter of the American Cancer Society. It was a great night. Unfortunately we didn’t play as well as we would have hoped.

The Mid-Prairie Golden Hawks boys’ basketball team defeated the West Branch Bears 53-46 Thursday, January 21, at home, avenging a January 15 loss to the Bears at West Branch.
Mid-Prairie held a slim 11-9 lead going into the second quarter, but the Bears were hot, outscoring Mid-Prairie 15-6 for a 24-17 halftime lead.
In the third quarter, the Golden Hawks turned the tables, scoring 17 points to the Bears’ four points, and taking a 34-28 lead into the last quarter.
Mid-Prairie narrowly won the fourth quarter, 19-18, and the Bears could not come back for a win.
Tanner Miller and Michael Aldeman scored in double figures for the Golden Hawks with 20 and 14 points, respectively. Miller led in rebounds with eight. Dylan Hochstetler had eight points and seven rebounds.
Mid-Prairie coach Don Showalter said, “We played very well in the second half and especially the third quarter where we held West Branch to only four points. After a good first quarter and a very poor second quarter, I have to give our players alot of credit for putting it together the second half both from the mental and the physical standpoint.
“Dylan Hochstetler played his second outstanding game in a row with six blocks and some tough defensive stops in the paint.
“Players that deserve mention are Christian Swartzentruber and Ryan Harris. Neither get a lot of playing time, but they work extremely hard and have great attitudes in practice which makes everyone better. Both will be good players in the future as they are juniors.
“Tanner Miller continues to get shots using his strength inside the paint. I thought Mark and Michael Aldeman also gave us a consistent four quarters of play with assists and some good shots.
“Quinn Hollan did not score as much as he sometimes does, but his defense is always consistent.
“I really like the effort our bench players continue to give the team – Aaron Smit, Robby Mostek, Michael Aldeman, Jordan Yotty and Oliver Hassman always seem to give us good minutes on the floor.”
