George R. Miller


November 14, 1935 - May 12, 2009

George R. Miller, 73, of Washington, Iowa, passed away Tuesday, May 12, 2009, at the United Presbyterian Home after a long illness. George enriched the lives of those he touched with his strong faith, kindness and passion for nature.
Celebration of life services were held 2 p.m. Saturday, May 16, 2009, at the First Baptist Church in Washington with Pastor Darryl Carr officiating. Military honors conducted by Washington American Legion Post 29 took place in conjunction with the memorial service. Visitation began at noon Friday at the Jones-Eden Funeral Home where the family was present to receive friends from 6:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. Private family interment will take place at a later date. In lieu of flowers, the family is requesting that donations be made to Paws and more, the Assure Center in Washington, Iowa, or Hospice of Washington County.
George Richard Miller was born November 14, 1935, in Iowa City, Iowa. He is the son of the late George H. Miller and Helen (Schenkel) Miller of Iowa City. He graduated from Wellman High School in 1954 and then served his country as a United States Navy Radio Operator (1954-1958).
George married Nancy Graf from Wellman in 1958. He worked as an Electronics Technician for Collins Radio in Cedar Rapids for nearly two decades and in facility maintenance for Yoder Feeds and the University of Iowa in the years to follow.
George married Deborah Mott from Paullina, Iowa, in 1985. He then worked as a Naturalist and Crisis Volunteer in Iowa City, Iowa; Big Bear Lake, California; Hillsdale, Michigan; and Washington, Iowa.
George attended First Baptist Church in Washington. His desire to make the world a btter place is evident in his numerous volunteer work efforts throughout his lifetime, most recently with the Salvation Army, Paws and ore, the Assure Center, Isaac Walton and the (ACCT) After School Program in Washington.
He is survived by his wife, Deborah (Mott) Miller and three children: George S. Miller and wife Lori of Cedar Rapids, David B. Miller of Coralville, Maria (Miller) Hanson and husband Greg Hanson of Columbus, Ohio. George has two grandchildren, Elizabeth Hanson and Peter Hanson of Columbus, Ohio. George is also survived by his sister, Ann (Miller) Schmitt and husband Lester Schmitt of Kinross.
