Lola Marner of Wellman was honored as the Washington County 2009 Outstanding Senior Volunteer at a award ceremony at Kirkwood Community College Thursday, May 28. The award was presented by Max Lewis of Wellman. Lewis is the chairman of the Washington County Task Force and a member of the Heritage Advisory Committee.
Marner was recognized for giving rides to elderly in the community, helping to count her church’s, Wellman Mennonite Church, offering weekly (she was also treasurer of the church for 24 years), helping in her church library, and visits to the homebound.
She also spends time with and helps elderly people at Parkview Manor and Pleasantview as well as others in the community.
Nominees must be a resident of a county in the Heritage Agency region, be age 60 or older, and currently provide volunteer service to the elderly, Heritage-funded programs, or the Heritage Agency.
This is the fifth consecutive year the Washington County Outstanding Senior Volunteer has been from Washington County.
Mid-Prairie Middle School, Kalona, was recognized for its service to seniors. MPMS was nominated by the Goodwin Senior Dining Commission, Wellman, for the Senior Night held annually at the middle school which provides an evening’s entertainment for seniors of the community.
Each spring, invitations are sent out and notices placed in local papers inviting senior citizens to Senior Night. Approximately 100 seniors attend. They are met at the door, served dinner, and may participate in various activities. The goal is for seniors and students to get to know one another. There is no charge for the evening.
Murval Weidlein of Wellman is a member of the Community Relations Committee of the Advisory Council.
