IMS Girls vs. WACO

The Iowa Mennonite girls’ basketball team resumed Southeast Iowa Super Conference play Tuesday, January 12, as they played host to the Warriors of WACO.
A quick start for WACO jumped them ahead 4-0, but IMS battled back in the first quarter of a physical contest. Down only five at the quarter break, IMS would go on a bit of a shooting drought until a foul at five minutes sent IMS to the free-throw line for opportunities to score while the clock was stopped. A big rally pulled the ladies in white back to within 10 at the half (32-22).
Although IMS came out firing in the second half, they were not able to overcome the early deficit as WACO continued to score points. After three periods of play Iowa Mennonite faced a grim 42-28 disadvantage. During the fourth quarter however, a momentum shift brought IMS back to within 10. Tired legs, and a strong running offense led by Warrior guard play would prove too much, and IMS fell to WACO 42-51.
Iowa Mennonite was led in scoring and rebounds by junior Carly Unruh with 14 points. Classmate Emma Yutzy added seven, and junior Mollie Ferguson connected for four. Freshman Laura Hochstetler came off the bench for eight points, while senior Linnea Slabaugh added four. Junior Mo Brenneman knocked in two fourth quarter free throws for two points, and senior Nicole Hershberger added a charity stripe point to round out the IMS scoring front.
