IMS Girls vs. Pekin
by Michelle Wade
In the second game of a triangular with Pekin High School, the Iowa Mennonite girls’ basketball team scored first and quickly, as they won the jump. Senior Linnea Slabaugh, elevated over her Panther counter-part to win the tip, knocking the ball directly into the unguarded hands of point guard Mo Brenneman (junior), who drove the half length of the court for an uncontested lay up.
Pekin answered back with a quick three point bucket at the other end, but IMS regained the lead after a 3-0 scoring run. IMS would keep it close, down only five after one period of play. Through no lack of effort in the second quarter, Iowa Mennonite headed to the locker room to make adjustments, facing a 25-16 half time deficit.
IMS hung with the Panthers in the third, battling back from a 34-18 margin, to close out the period 39-24. Pekin put the game out of reach with a fast paced offense, and IMS would fall 53-34.
Junior Carly Unruh had a solid night inside for Iowa Mennonite scoring 16 points and nabbing 10 rebounds. Senior Nicole Hershberger added six in the paint, while junior Emma Yutzy and freshman Laura Hershberger had four points a piece. Mollie Ferguson and Mo Brenneman (juniors) each contributed for two and senior Kerri Hostetler added a free throw.
