Mid-Prairie girls lose at Regina

The Mid-Prairie Golden Hawks fell to the conference-leading Iowa City Regina Regals in a Cedar Valley Conference match-up Tuesday, January 19, at Regina 73-43.
Regina got out of the gate quickly, jumping to a 19-10 lead after a quarter. They pushed the lead to 39-20 at the half.
Mid-Prairie played a very good third quarter, cutting the lead to 16. The young Hawks ran out of gas in the final frame, and Regina continued to press the entire game to win by 30.
Mid-Prairie was led by Meghan Redlinger and Erika Murphy with eight points each. Mallory McArtor had seven, Taylor Hershberger five, Kattie Redlinger and Erin Cayton had four each, and Olivia Lugar had three. Mariah Swartzentruber led Mid-Prairie with seven rebounds, and McArtor had five steals.
Coach’s comments: In order to compete in this game, we needed to control tempo and eliminate their easy baskets, but we were unable to do so.
We fought back some in the third quarter but got worn out in the fourth.
In the defeat, there was still some improvement from the first time we played Regina, and with them pressing the entire game, the deficit looks worse than the game was.
I really hope these kids remember this year and games like this as they get into the next few years in terms of pressing us ahead by 30, etc. It should serve as motivation as we fully expect to compete for conference championships as soon as next year.
