MP Girls vs. Regina

by Marc Pennington
The Mid-Prairie Golden Hawks fell to the conference leading Iowa City Regina Regals in a CVC match-up Tuesday, January 19, at Regina 73-43. Regina got out of the gate quickly jumping to a 19-10 lead after a quarter. They pushed the lead to 39-20 at the half.
“In order to compete in this game, we needed to control tempo and eliminate their easy baskets,” said coach Marc Pennington, “but we were unable to do so.”
The Hawks fought back in the third quarter to cut the Regal lead to 16 after three. The young Hawks ran out of gas in the final frame and Regina continued to press the entire game to win by 30 points.
“In the defeat, their was still some improvement from the first time we played Regina and with them pressing the entire game, the deficit looks worse than the game was,” said Pennington. “I hope the girls remember this year and games like this as we get into the next few years in terms of teams pressing us ahead by 30. It should serve as motivation as we fully expect to complete for conference championships as soon as next year.”
Mid-Prairie was led by Meghan Redlinger and Erika Murphy with 8 points, Mallory McArtor had 7, Taylor Hershberger 5, Kattie Redlinger and Erin Cayton 4, and Olivia Lugar had 3. Mariah Swartzentruber led MP with 7 rebounds and Mallory McArtor had 5 steals.
