John I. Liska, 91, of Riverside, Iowa, died Monday, December 5, 2011, at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m.  Friday, December 9, 2011, at the Sorden-Lewis Home for Funeral and Cremation Services in Riverside.  Burial will be in the Riverside Public Cemetery with full military rites by the Wellman American Legion.

Visitation is Thursday, December 8, from 4 – 7 p.m. at the Sorden-Lewis Home for Funeral and Cremation Services.

Steve Schultz, 60

Steve Schultz,  60, of Ainsworth, Iowa, died Saturday, November 26, 2011 at his residence.

Celebration of life services will be held 10 a.m. Wednesday, November 30, 2011, at the Jones Eden Funeral Home with services conducted by Sherrie Hazen-Hansen.

Visitation will begin noon Tuesday at the Jones Eden Funeral Home where the family will be receive friends from 5-8 p.m.

Interment with military honors will take place at the Oregon Township Cemetery in Ainsworth, Iowa.

A general memorial has been established.

 

Charles R. Werbach, 80

Charles R. Werbach, 80, of Lone Tree, passed away on November 25, 2011 at the Lone Tree Care Center.

Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Tuesday, November 29, at the United Presbyterian Church in Lone Tree with Rev. Susan Barnes officiating.

Visitation will be held 9-11 a.m.  Tuesday at the United Presbyterian Church.  Burial will be held in Lone Tree Cemetery, with full military rites by the Lone Tree American Legion Post 457.

In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to the United Presbyterian Church or Hospice Compassus.

Ivy Jane Yoder

A celebration of life for Ivy Jane Yoder, 17-month-old daughter of Trent A. and Tammy A. (Nordman) Yoder, of Kalona, Iowa, was held Monday, October 11 at 11 a.m. at the East Union Mennonite Church in rural Kalona, with Pastor Tammy Buseman officiating. Ivy died Tuesday, October 5, 2010, at the University of Iowa Hospital following a sudden illness.
Ivy was born April 7, 2009 at Mercy Hospital in Iowa City. She loved playing with the kitties, chasing the chickens, looking at books and singing. She was known as a fearless little girl.
Survivors include her parents, Trent and Tammy Yoder, Kalona; two brothers, Sam and Henry Yoder, Kalona; paternal grandmother, Jeanette Miller, Kalona; paternal grandfather, Jim and Rose Yoder, Baxter, Tennessee; maternal grandparents, John and Beverly Nordman, Algona, Iowa; paternal great-grandparents, Don and Pauline Miller, Kalona; and many loving aunts, uncles and cousins.
Preceding Ivy in death were her great grandparents, Wayne and Elizabeth Yoder, Harry and Lavern Lietz, Fern Lietz and Walter and Margaret Nordman.

Jackie Lea Tevis, 52, of Longview, Texas, formerly of Lone Tree, Iowa, passed away Sunday, August 20, 2010, at her home in Longview following a terminal illness. Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Friday, August 20, 2010, at the Sorden-Lewis Home for Funeral and Cremation Services in Lone Tree. Rev. Ron Laschmitt will officiate. Burial will be in the Lone Tree Cemetery. Following the committal services at the cemetery, a time of food and fellowship will be held at the Lone Tree American Legion. Jackie Lea Simmons was born August 28, 1957, in Apple Valley, California, the daughter of Oliver Kenneth Hoffman and Betty Ann Simmons. She graduated from Lone Tree High School in May 1975. She graduated from the University of Iowa in May 1982 with a bachelor’s degree in business. In June of 1982, she was united in marriage to Jay Tevis. The couple moved to Longview, Texas, in 2007 so Mr. Simmons could teach at LeTourneau University. Mrs. Simmons was a devoted wife and mother and loved to cook, sew, and knit.
She will be deeply missed by her husband, Jay-Evan Jacob Tevis, Longview, Texas; her children Rachel, Lindsey, and Benjamin Tevis, Longview, Texas; her mother, Betty Simmons, Lone Tree, Iowa; her father, Kenny Hoffman of Mason City, Iowa; two step-sisters, Tammy Simmons and Wanda Magruder; and stepbrother, Dallas Simmons II.
She was preceded in death by her grandparents and her stepfather, Dallas Simmons.

Kenneth V. Kenny

Ken Kenney was born March 14, 1930, in Riverside, Iowa, the son of Frank and Leona (Holderness) Kenney. He attended Riverside schools and later enlisted in the United States Army. January 14, 1967, Mr. Kenney was united in marriage to Mary Jeanne Pierce. For more than 42 years, Mr. Kenney worked as a truck mechanic for several different companies in the Iowa City area.
Survivors include his wife, Mary Jeanne Kenney, Iowa City; a daughter, Sherry English Allen (Steven), Agency, Iowa; two sons, William English, Stone City, Iowa; Bradley English, Iowa City; two sisters, Mildred Flynn, Iowa City; Gertrude (Hubert) Rath, West Des Moines, Iowa; a sister-in-law, Lorrine Kenney, Burt, Iowa; six grandchildren, Sarah, Jessica, Bobbie, Andrew, Terrie and Jacob; and 13 great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents; a sister, Dorothy; and a brother, Lester.

Lloyd Bender, 85, of Kalona, Iowa, died Wednesday morning, August 25, 2010, at Pleasantview Home in Kalona following a lengthy illness.
Memorial services were held Friday, August 27, 2010, in the Kalona Mennonite Church, Kalona with Pastor Mick Murray and Chaplain David L. Yoder officiating. Private family burial was held prior to the service. A memorial fund has been established for the Kalona First Responders, Kalona Volunteer Fire Department and Iowa City Hospice. Lloyd Bender was born November 7, 1924, in Kalona the son of Ira and Lena (Miller) Bender. He attended various rural schools, including Pleasant Hill, Center and Middleburg. He was united in marriage to Barbara Stutzman at Fairview Church December 24, 1944. Mr. Bender was a farmer and later worked at Gingerich Implement, Kalona Battery Factory and the Kalona Bakery, where he drove the delivery van for 15 years. He was a member of the Fairview Mennonite Church and later transferred membership to the Kalona Mennonite Church. Mr. Bender enjoyed pitching fastball, watching his grandkids in their sports activities and was a NASCAR fan, where his favorite driver was Richard Petty.
Survivors include his wife, Barbara Bender, Kalona; four children and their spouses, Derald (Marilyn) Bender, Kalona; Dwight (Jenelle) Bender, Kalona; Delwyn “Bud” Bender, Kalona; Darlene (Ron) Gingerich, Riverside; one foster son, Mike (Emily) Ferguson, Kalona; seven grandchildren, Mike (Brenda) Bender, Vicki Bender, Kelby (Leanne) Bender, Tiffani (Richie) Davis, Torrey (Jody) Gingerich, Tyrell Gingerich, Tristan (Jacque) Gingerich, three foster granddaughters, Kelli (Justin) Schrock, Jodi and Mollie Ferguson; eight great-grandchildren, Cassidy and Abe Bender, Madelyn and Morgyn Bender, Lillian and Drew Davis, Grady and Landry Gingerich; one sister, Ruby (Owen) Miller, Oxford, Iowa; and one brother-in-law, Paul Shetler, Greenwood, Delware.
He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Ivan and Monroe Bender; and two sisters, Dorothy Shetler and Mary Bender.

Earl R. Wagamon

Earl R. Wagamon was born August 27, 1925, in Kinross, Iowa, the son of Harry and Mildred T. (Long) Wagamon. He served in the US Coast Guard from 1943 – 1946. October 19, 1949, he was united in marriage to Dolorosa Bohr in Richmond, Iowa. Mr. Wagamon worked as a mechanic for many years at Farmers Supply & Sales Inc., drove truck in later years and owned and operated a bike repair and sales shop at his home. He was a member of the Richmond AMVET Post #107 and the Kalona Downtown Athletic Club. He enjoyed fixing bikes, bowling and building and repairing racecars.
Survivors include five children and their spouses, Sandy (Joe) Joynt, Coralville, Iowa; Randy (Deb) Wagamon, Kalona; Gary (LuAnn) Wagamon, Wellman, Iowa; Cindy (Ervin) Swantz, Excello, Missouri; Tim (Yolonda) Wagamon, Solon, Iowa; a daughter-in-law, Wendy Northcutt, Cedar Rapids, Iowa; 13 grandchildren, Ben, Andy and Emily Joynt, Sara and Sean Wagamon, Mike Wagamon, Lindsey Wagamon, Melissa Hallowell, Nicholas Swantz, Jennifer Anderson, Matt, Jason and Brian Wagamon; four great-grandchildren, Cole Wagamon, Izaac Anderson, Trace Hallowell and Carter Hamilton; two sisters, Dorothy Young, Cedar Rapids; Ruth Hamdorf, Cedar Rapids; and a sister-in-law, Mary Wagamon, Washington, Iowa.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Dolorosa in 2005; a son, Terry Wagamon in 1983; a grandson, Chris Wagamon in 2005; a brother, Lynn Wagamon; and a sister, Gayle Ewing.

Linda M. Chalupa

Linda Mae Chalupa was born March 18, 1951, in Mt. Pleasant, Iowa, the daughter of Leslie and Etta Mae (Lantz) Ross. She was raised and educated in Winfield, graduating from Winfield-Mt. Union High School in 1969. After high school, she attended the Clerical Program at Southeastern Iowa Community College in Burlington. After graduation she began working in the Journalism Department at the University of Iowa as a secretary. She married Duane C. Chalupa September 18, 1971, and they settled on a farm northeast of Ainsworth where they farmed and raised four sons. Mrs. Chalupa began working as a school lunch cook at Highland Community School in 1989, the last eight years as head cook, and retired in 2009. She was a member of the Ainsworth Community Church and was involved with the Cub and Boy Scout programs in Riverside when her sons were growing up. She enjoyed traveling with her family, gardening, canning, crocheting, reading, and especially spending time with her family and grandchildren.
Mrs. Chalupa is survived by her husband, Duane Chalupa, Ainsworth; four sons, Brian (Anna) Chalupa, Ainsworth; Kevin (Katie) Chalupa, Amana, Iowa; Andy (Kelly) Chalupa, Ankeny, Iowa; and Corey (Amber) Chalupa, Waukee, Iowa; five grandchildren, Carter, Courtney, Marissa, Charlie, and Owen; and two brothers, Richard and Gary Ross, both of Winfield.

Carol Ann Riggan was born May 10, 1941, in Iowa City, Iowa, the daughter of Henry and Amanda (Seering) Riggan. She was a 1959, graduate of Lone Tree High School. June 24, 1961, Ms. Riggan was united in marriage to James C. Johnson in Lone Tree. She worked as an Administrative Assistant for Syngenta Seeds of Lone Tree. She was a member of the United Presbyterian Church, Peanuts Club and the Red Hat Club. Mrs. Johnson enjoyed camping, boating, shopping, morning coffee club with the girls, but most of all, she loved taking care of her family, especially the grandchildren.
She will be deeply missed by her husband, Jim Johnson, Lone Tree; two children, James K. Bradford Lee Miller was born October 31, 1970, in Iowa City, Iowa, the son of Wilson and Lois Gingerich Miller. He was a graduate of Mid-Prairie High School and had attended Kirkwood Community College. Mr. Miller enlisted in the US Army September 19, 2005, and had reached the rank of Sergeant and was involved with Army Intelligence. He had served with AFRICOM in Africa and at the time of his death was stationed in England. Sgt. Miller wanted to make a difference in the world. He was twice awarded the Joint Meritorius Unit Award, Joint Service Commendation Medal, Joint Service Achievement Medal and the Army Commendation Medal. His duty stations included Korea and the United Kingdom. Prior to enlisting he worked in communications with MCI in Cedar Rapids and later he was employed by AW Welt Ambrisco Insurance in Iowa City. Sgt. Miller was gifted at computer technology and he enjoyed photography and gardening.
He is survived by his parents, Wilson and Lois Miller, Kalona; seven siblings, Ethel (Tim) Sieren, Keota, Iowa; David (Peggy) Miller, Riverside, Iowa; Jimmy (Jackie) Miller, Wellman, Iowa; Brenda (Pat) Mougin, Cosgrove, Iowa; Ken (Lori) Miller, Kalona; Mike Miller, Wellman; Deb (Kelsey) Redlinger, Kalona; numerous nieces and nephews; great nieces and nephews; extended family and friends.
He was preceded in death by his grandparents.

Theresa Lynn Schnoebelen

Theresa Lynn Piper was born April 14, 1962, in Iowa City. She attended and later graduated with the class of 1980 from Regina High School. October 20, 1984, she was united in marriage to Brian E. Schnoebelen in Oxford, Iowa. She was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church in Hills. She served as chapter president of Beta Theta of Beta Sigma Phi since its inception, and was a member of Six in the City. She enjoyed beading, creating and sharing her works with others, doing various arts and crafts projects, was an avid computer user, reading her Kindle, and in recent years cared for her mother in their home.
She is survived by her husband, Brian Schnoebelen, Iowa City; her mother, Patricia Piper, Iowa City; a brother and his wife, Christopher and Mary Jo Piper, Coralville, Iowa; her in-laws, Dale and Connie Schnoebelen, Iowa City; sisters-in-law, Lynn Knight and Kelly Schnoebelen, both of Iowa City; and numerous aunts, uncles, cousins; three nieces; and two nephews.
She was preceded in death by her father, grandparents, and a brother-in-law, Jay Schnoebelen.
