The Highland Athletic boosters met April 5 at the Highland High School.
The Treasurer’s report was given.
Last month’s minutes were approved.
Physical night was a big success. A request for financial support was made for the softball and baseball teams, but it was tabled until the next meeting. Banner additions have arrived and they are in the process of being added.
The Riverside Casino Foundation payment was made along with all submitted expenses.
Scholarship forms have been provided to the school. The winners will be announced at the Athletic Supper and during the School’s Award Night.
The Build-out committeee has set April 19 as the date to get into the new concession area. Items to sell were discussed. Brian Arnold has finished the cupboards in the outside concession stand. The old concession stand will be used for soccer games.
A meeting needs to be scheduled to discuss layout and design for the area to place the bricks from the fundraiser.
All discounted clothing will be on display at home events. About $500 of clothing was sold during the physical night.
A new wrestling room committee was formed. A meeting was held with parents of wrestlers to discuss and tour the new wrestling facilities. The list of items to complete the build out is decreasing. Painting is to be completed by a small group April 5-16.
Doug Ossman will be taking over the golf tournament which will be held at the Riverside Casino and Golf Resort. Meetings to plan the even should start in May.
Senior night for the soccer team is May 4.
Athletic pass information was distributed to the papers, put up on the website and will be in the Highland monthly newsletter. Positive feedback has been given but it was decided it needs to be promoted more.
Volunteers are needed to work in the concession stand during the spring/summer sports seasons. Winter workers made $2,800.

The Highland Huskies lost to Pekin on the road Friday, January 29, 60-49. The Huskies got off to a very slow start and couldn’t catch up.
We had no fire or intensity in the first half, and it showed. You can’t play good teams and expect to win the game by walking on the floor.
Highland coach Jody Fink said, “(Pekin) shot over 70 percent from the field in the first half. The shot 50 percent from the three-point line for the game. They made more free throws that we attempted. Plain and simple, the just outplayed us tonight.
“We had no fire or intensity in the first half, and it showed. You can’t play good teams and expect to win the game by walking on the floor.”
The Huskies were behind 8-21 after one quarter and trailed 25-42 at halftime. They cut Pekin’s lead to 14 after three quarters, but it was too little too late.

The Highland girls’ basketball team defeated WACO on the road 47-29 Tuesday, January 26.
The win came despite a lackluster performance from the girls. Highland coach Jody Fink said, “It just looked as if we didn’t want to be here. We had no fire or communication throughout the game. We never shoot well at WACO, and tonight was no different.”
Although the Huskies hit two of two from three-point range, from two-point range, only 12 of 32 shots connected. The girls were just over 50 percent from the free throw line, hitting 17 of 32 attempts.
Highland led 11-7 after one quarter, and the halftime score was 29-13, Highland. WACO outscored the Huskies in the third quarter, 10-7, but Highland outscored WACO in the final quarter 11-6.
Anna Sweeting was the only Highland player to score in double figures with 14 points. She also led in rebounds with 14 for a double-double game. Molly Metz and Brittney Gerot each scored nine points. Mollie Kleopfer led in assists with six and in steals with four.
Coach Fink said, “We need to finish around the basket and that would help our free throw percentage. We took better care of the ball but lacked intensity.
“We were more patient tonight, but we need to figure out when to be patient and when to attack.”
The Huskies are 11-4 in conference play, 13-5 overall.
Highland stats: Kayla Schneider 1 0-2 2, 4 rebounds, 1 steal, 3 assists, 1 block; Brittney Gerot 1 6-9 9, 1 3-pointer, 5 rebounds, 1 assist; Mollie Kleopfer 2 2-2 6, 5 rebounds, 4 steals, 6 assists; Chelsea Miller 2 0-0 5, 1 3-pointer, 4 rebounds, 2 steals, 1 block; Morgan Fisher 1 0-0 2, 3 rebounds, 1 steal; Molly Metz 3 3-4 9, 1 rebound, 1 steal, 1 assist; Kate Hawkins 1 rebound, 1 steal; Abby Hanson 1 rebound; Anna Sweeting 4 6-15 14, 14 rebounds, 1 steal, 1 assist, 1 block; Ashley Davis 1 rebound.

Highland wrestlers had a tough day at the East Buchanan duals Saturday, January 23. Jesse Hahn (119) and Zach Frank (125) went undefeated for the day.
Coach Clint Jones said, “Hahn really pressured his opponents all day, as he earned us bonus points in all of his matches. He wrestled with some pain, however, he’s a tough kid, and was able to block out that distraction and focus on his objective. He earned three pins and a technical fall. And he showed his toughness last weekend as well at Hudson.
“Frank started the day with a solid workmanlike fashion earning a 7-3 match. In his second match against Sumner-Fredericksburg, he earned two takedowns in the first period to take a 4-1 lead. However, in the second period, Zach moved a lot, but was caught rolling around the mat too much, and by the end of the second period, trailed 6-8. After an escape, Zach hit a nice takedown forcing his opponent to his back. Zach polished things up his next three matches, as he learned he has to keep in basic positioning and not always try to force the action.
“Brett Walsh came out with really good intensity this day, but a few technical positions prevented him from winning a match or two more. In his second match, he yielded an early takedown but quickly escaped and went back to work on his feet. He took his opponent down and turned him to his back, unfortunately Brett couldn’t secure the fall. His opponent reversed Brett and turned him to his back. In his last match, he had a lot of vigor and went out there with some real zest, and earned the fall within a minute.”

Regardless of the outcome, the three Highland students who wrestled on the USA team in Australia this month knew they were winners just in being selected for the 21st annual Down Under Sport Tournament, Coming back with the gold made it just that much better.
Cousins Todd (Toddy) Hahn, Jesse Hahn and Jake Walton were part of the team that competed in Queesland in the event held by the International Sports Specialists, Inc. (ISSI) against Australians who were determined to take back the championship.
But, “We beat them,” said Toddy.
He added that it was all freestyle. There also was Sumo style wrestling on the beach, a competition which they also won.
“I think they were surprised,” said Todd Hahn Senior who was their as team coach, noting that the competition had some top national wrestlers who had scored wins in European competition as well. Even more, the Australian team was a packed one that ruled a \wrestler (who had pinned the national champion and placed third overall as not good enough.”
