Mary M. Helmuth
June 12, 1918 – February 5, 2009
Mary M. Helmuth, 90, of Kalona, Iowa, died Thursday, February 5, 2009, at Mercy Hospital in Iowa City, Iowa, following a short illness.
Funeral services were Sunday, February 8, at the Sharon Bethel Church in rural Kalona. Minister’s in charge were Delmar Bontrager, Gabriel Beachy, Jacob Yoder, and Lamar Ropp. Burial was in the North Gingerich Cemetery in rural Kalona. A memorial fund has been established for the Sharon Bethel Church. The Yoder-Powell Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements. Messages may be sent to the family at www.powellfuneralhomes.com.
Mary M. Miller was born June 12, 1918, in Yoder, Kansas, the daughter of Harvey C. and Mary (Fry) Miller. Her family moved to Kalona when she was 12 years old. On October 16, 1941, she was united in marriage to John C. Helmuth in Kalona. She was a charter member of the Sharon Bethel Church. She enjoyed spending time with her family and friends, quilting, gardening, and playing games.
Mrs. Helmuth is survived by six children, Lynn Helmuth (Ethel) of Kalona; David Helmuth (Char) of Atwater, Minnesota; John Dale Helmuth (Shirley) of Kalona; Bertha Yutzy (Ray) of Kalona; Floyd Helmuth (Charlene) of Kalona; James Helmuth of Phoenix, Arizona; a daughter-in-law, Barbara Helmuth of Kalona; 24 grandchildren; 49 great-grandchildren; a brother, Harvey Miller of Kalona; and two sisters, Susan Yoder of Riverside, Iowa; and Edna Miller of Kalona.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband in March of 1992; a daughter-in-law, Esther Helmuth; and eight brothers and three sisters.
